WOOHOO for it being race week for my first (and only) 70.3 of 2018 (as of yet). You can read about my latest workouts and the switch to triathlon training in my last post here.
I’m a bit nervous. I prepared for 6 months for my first 70.3 last September in Lake Placid and this year I’ve had a total of 3 weeks post Boston marathon to get ready for this 70.3.
This past weekend was a bit rough. My Saturday run was just awful and it’s probably the worst run I’ve had in months. I struggled to keep pace and mentally was not in it. I actually cried (which never happens) and had to stop and get myself together. I managed to get in 10 miles and felt much better at the end.
I’m most concerned about the swim, not because of the distance, but the open water. I have a bit of swim anxiety, but was able to get in the water on Saturday and tackle 1800 yards. No creatures to be seen, but a tough current. Fingers crossed for calm waters on Saturday.
I’m heading into this week with a much better attitude towards this race. I found a quote that really resonated with me….
“The important thing is not being afraid to take a chance.
Remember, the greatest failure is to not try. Once you
find something you love to do, be the best at doing it.”- Debbi Fields
I’m taking a chance on this race. I’m using this race for practice, to build confidence, to prove to myself that I CAN DO THIS. I’m not focusing on time (although I think I can PR from Lake Placid – 5:58). I’m going to just give 110% and see what happens. I’m going to learn, see where I am with my training and then shift my focus to areas that need improvement. I really want to focus on my nutrition and start to craft a plan that works for me (and my stomach). These endurance races are so different than a regular road race so coming up with a good strategy is A MUST.
